How to Open a Bank Account in Japan

Choosing the Right Bank

Japan has several major banks that accept foreign residents. Each has different requirements and services available in English.

  • Japan Post Bank (Yucho) — easiest to open, available at any post office
  • SMBC Prestia — English-friendly, formerly Citibank Japan
  • Shinsei Bank — good English support, low fees for international transfers
  • MUFG — largest bank in Japan, extensive ATM network

Required Documents

  1. Residence card (zairyu card)
  2. Passport
  3. Personal seal (inkan) — or signature may be accepted
  4. Phone number registered in Japan
  5. Proof of address (utility bill or residence certificate)

The Application Process

Visit the bank branch with your documents during business hours. Some banks allow online applications, but the first account often requires an in-person visit.

It usually takes 1-2 weeks to receive your cash card by mail after the account is opened.
